Vietnamese-origin artists in UK retain memories of homeland

Opened on April 19, the exhibition is the continuation of Vietnamese-origin artists’ journey to explore their homeland that started in 2022.

A large number of visitors from different groups and ages, especially young Vietnamese, have come to the event.

On display are items reflecting typical things, landscapes, and images of the past, traditional meals that connect family generations, and traditional foods deeply intertwined with the memory of Vietnam and the Vietnamese identity that parents want to pass down to future generations in the places they have settled down.

Visitors are greeted by a striking urban landscape installation constructed from Vietnamese plastic stools, highlighting the psychogeography of migrant populations.

The main room showcases object-based works on a low white table, inviting viewers to sit on bamboo carpets to engage with the works.

A space featuring a traditional-style altar of Vietnamese people also shows visitors a typical image of the country.

The exhibition that also includes many workshops, tea parties, and food sharing will last through July 11.

Vietnamese Dance Team to Participate in Summer Festival in Japan

The Yosakoi Soran festival, one of Japan’s most renowned summer festivals, has been around for more than three decades. Since 1992, the Annual Naruko Festival has been held in Hokkaido at the beginning of June. People celebrate traditional music and dances performed with Naruko, an ancient Japanese percussion instrument. The festival is also marked by the singing of the traditional “Soran Bushi” song, which was once sung by local fishermen as they went herring fishing. At Sapporo Odori Park in Sapporo, Japan, dance teams competed for four days, from June 7-11. This year, for the first time, the festival utilized Virtual Reality (VR) technology to present 3D performances. Vietnamese writer shares love of homeland in award-winning English-language book

A dream Mai, originally from Ninh Binh Province in northern Vietnam, wrote “The Mountains Sing” as a way to spread Vietnamese literature and culture by recounting the story of a Vietnamese family’s journey through the twentieth century, including their trials and tribulations during the French Colonial period, the separation of the North and the South, the Vietnam War, and the present day. Her inspiration for the novel was a deep frustration that language barriers were a major obstacle for international readers who wished to access Vietnamese literature.  The books on Vietnam that English-language readers did have access to were primarily about the Vietnam War and written by Western writers who gave their Vietnamese characters little-to-no voice, using them mostly as background characters. Bac Ha market in the early days of New Year

Bac Ha market is located approximately 76km away from the centre of Lao Cai province. Tourists can travel by car to the market which is held every Sunday. The first market session of 2023 takes place on January 1 which coincides with New Year celebrations. A couple from Hanoi spends their New Year holiday exploring Bac Ha market for the first time. Nhung, a resident of Hanoi, shares that she’s fascinated with images of ethnic children donning colourful costumes. Ethnic H’Mong couples go shopping at the market from early in the morning to purchase decorative items for their houses in 2023.
